I’m Noah Johnson, a designer with a background in software engineering, lettering and graphic design. My career began in the video game industry, where I worked as a technical artist and tools programmer. My role bridged the gap between software engineering and art disciplines. I specialized in working alongside artists writing plugins for Maya, Photoshop, Substance Designer and Unreal Engine to make artist workflows more efficient.
I first began exploring lettering and design through my chain stitch embroidery business, working with restaurants, musicians, barbershops, bowling leagues, and hot rod shops—all in need of distinctive branding. This naturally expanded my work into hand-lettered logos and graphic design.
Drawing inspiration from the unsung commercial artists, embroidery operators, and sign painters of my favorite design eras (1930s-40s), my work blends the efficiency of a technical background with the nuances of design done-by-hand.
I'm also a collector of old print material, lettering books, vintage packaging and will find any excuse to scan and archive old material to "save it." If that sounds like you too, I'd love to chat!
