PROJECT: STITCH-RITE HOOK KNIFE

STITCH-RITE STUDIO | EMBROIDERY HOOK KNIFE
This project began with the desire to recreate and manufacture a specialized sewing tool for chain-stitch embroidery; one that had long been discontinued by the Singer Sewing Machine Company. I set out to design a modern version that honored the silhouette of the original, while improving the materials, construction, and usability.
The handle and blade were designed to echo the shape of the antique tools, but updated with premium materials. I used high-quality stainless steel for the blade and selected distinctive wood varieties for the handle. The blade features a hidden tang with a beveled taper, allowing it to twist securely into the handle without the use of adhesives. The handle was hand-turned with a taper to prevent the tool from rolling off a sewing table—an important detail for working artists.

PROCESS
I designed the matchbox-style packaging to be produced using a plotter. My primary goal was to reduce the number of steps needed for hand-assembly, relying on the plotter to make precise cuts and scores.
I created the main graphic illustration in Procreate, beginning with a series of rough sketches on paper before refining it. I then brought the artwork into Illustrator and prepared a color-separated version for screen printing.
Choosing materials with a tactile quality was essential to the experience of the packaging. I chose a textured cardstock from French Paper and had the graphic screen printed to emphasize texture and encourage the imperfect alignment that comes with color separated registration.
